Bringing home a new cat is exciting — and a little overwhelming. Having the essentials ready before your cat arrives makes the transition calmer for both of you. Here’s a practical checklist of what to buy when you adopt a cat.
The must-haves (get these before day one)
- Litter box(es). The rule of thumb is one box per cat, plus one extra. Choose a box large enough for your cat to turn around comfortably.
- Cat litter. A low-dust, natural litter (like PawHalo tofu litter) is gentle on new cats and easy to keep clean. Start with the litter the shelter used, then transition gradually.
- Food and water bowls. Shallow, wide bowls (ceramic or stainless steel) prevent whisker fatigue. Keep them away from the litter box.
- Quality cat food. Ask the shelter what your cat has been eating and start with the same to avoid tummy upset.
- A carrier. Essential for the ride home and every vet visit. A hard-sided carrier with a top opening is easiest.
Comfort and enrichment
- Scratching post or cat tree. Scratching is a need, not a bad habit — give them the right outlet and your furniture is safer.
- Toys. A wand toy for interactive play, plus a few solo toys.
- A cozy bed or two, and ideally a high perch — cats love to survey their world from above.
- A hiding spot. A covered bed or even a cardboard box helps a nervous new cat feel safe.
Health and grooming
- A brush suited to your cat’s coat, and nail clippers.
- ID and microchip. A collar with an ID tag, and ask your vet about microchipping.
- A first vet visit. Budget for a wellness check, vaccinations, and parasite prevention soon after adoption.
